Modern ethiopian group Abinnet Berhanu’s Ahndenet አንድነት (meaning: Unity) pays respect to Ethiopian folk, pop, and instrumental jazz music, interpreting the unique musical cultures that span northern and southern Ethiopia. The music of ahndenet is influenced by the concept of the bahil bet (meaning: culture house) where the TRADITIONAL MUSICAL STYLINGS of different ethnic groups that make up Ethiopia are collectively featured. Ahndenet expands on this idea, highlighting the different genres, cultures and generations that make up what we know as modern Ethiopian music and aims to further build on that legacy in the diaspora. ahndenet ALSO features Ethiopian vocalist Genet Abate who has been active in the Ethiopian American music community performing regularly across the country at Ethiopian clubs and festivals. In their second year of performing, Ahndenet has come to represent the latest wave in Ethiopian diaspora artistic expression nestling their influences between Ethiojazz giant Mulatu Astatke, traditional Ethiopian ethnic music and the danceable energy of the golden age of Ethiopian funk.
